LaFontaine Runner-Up at Ontario Amateur
July 15, 2005 | Men's Golf
NORMAN, Okla. University of Oklahoma senior Shawn LaFontaine finished runner-up at the Ontario Men's Amateur Championship in Port Stanley, Ontario, Canada, today.
LaFontaine (278, -6) fired a 2-under 70 on the 6,800-yard Redtail Golf Course, taking second behind Graham Hill (Bright's Grove, Ontario) by four strokes.
“I'm happy that I played consistent,” LaFontaine, who dealt with a wrist injury through most of the collegiate season, said. “It was a fairly tough course, but I played well and hit a few great shots.”
LaFontaine carded two eagles on the day, including one on his final hole when he used a 2-iron off the tee to drive the ball within three feet of the pin and clinch sole position of second place.
“I came up a few strokes behind, but I'm excited with my play,” LaFontaine continued. “I'm honored to represent Ontario for the Willingdon Cup again and I can't wait to get back to Oklahoma and play for the Sooners again.”
It is the Cobourg, Ontario, native's second runner-up finish at the Ontario Men's Amateur Championship. He also placed second in 2003, earning a spot on the province's Willingdon Cup team that season. With today's result, LaFontaine will represent Ontario again for the Willingdon Cup at the Canadian Amateur Championships held August 14-19.
