Perianu Reaches USTA Title Match

June 28, 2005 | Women's Tennis

NORMAN, Okla. - Former Sooner All-American Anda Perianu advanced to the singles title match Sunday, June 26 at the U.S. Tennis Association- Edmond Medical Center 2005 Women's Satellite Tournament. The two-time Big 12 Player of the Year and No. 3 seed took the first set, 6-3, before dropping the final two, 3-6, 4-6, to champion Sarah Riske, the fifth-seed overall. Riske, a former All-American from Vanderbilt, met Perianu for the first time in a singles match at the finals.

“It was a good tournament,” Perianu said, “but I think the results show how I feel about my performance.”

Perianu reached the finals after a 6-2, 6-4 upset win over No. 1  Salome Devidze. Perianu had lost to Debidze in straight sets last year in Baltimore.

“I have been winning a lot over the past three or four weeks.” Perianu said. “That can be a good thing, but also a bad thing. Going into the final, I kind of expected a win, keeping me from focusing and not really giving 100 percent on the court.”

At Oklahoma, Perianu produced an overall singles record of 86-17 and owns OU's best career singles winning percentage with an .834 mark. Perianu also claimed the Big 12 No. 1 Singles title in 2003 and 2004 and was the ITA Central Region Player of the Year.  Perianu is the only Sooner to ever play in three NCAA Championships and she left her mark as the best women's tennis player to ever play at OU.

“I'm going to start over.” Perianu explained. “Next, I am playing in a $50,000 qualifying tournament in College Park, Md., and I am going to focus on each match.”
