ATLANTA -- Women's Basketball Coaches Association (WBCA) President Doug Bruno announced his recent appointments and the election results for the WBCA Board of Directors. Thirteen new members have been added to make up the 27-member board of coaches.
Newly appointed members include: Geno Auriemma, University of Connecticut (Division I/At-Large); Carolyn Campbell-McGovern, Ivy League (Committee on Basketball Issues Chair); Pokey Chatman, Louisiana State University (Black Coaches Association Representative); Sherri Coale, University of Oklahoma (Division I/At-Large); Gail Goestenkors, Duke University (Division I/At-Large); Muffet McGraw, University of Notre Dame (NCAA Division I Legislative Chair); Sam Nichols, McMurry University (Male Coaches of Women's Basketball Representative); Donna Orender, WNBA (WNBA Representative); Sue Ramsey, Ashland University (NCAA Division II Legislative Chair), Brad Smith, Oregon City High School (High School Representative) and C. Vivian Stringer, Rutgers University (Division I/At-Large).
Elected members include: Nan Carney-DeBord, Ohio Wesleyan University (Division III/At-Large); Michael Landers, Trinity Valley Community College (Junior College/Community College Representative); and voted by the WBCA membership for a consecutive three-year term is Cathy Parson, Howard University (Division I/Middle East Representative) and Paul Thomas, Cal State Poly Pomona (Division II/Group II Representative).
"I am extremely excited to have such a well-rounded group of colleagues to join me during my term as president," Bruno said. "Each of these individuals bring a unique perspective, outstanding experience, great knowledge, strong leadership and diversity to the WBCA Board of Directors. At this point, the possibilities are limitless for the impact the Association will make on the sport of women's basketball with this assembly of professionals."
Other members of the WBCA Board of Directors include: Lisa Bluder, University of Iowa (NCAA Division I/Midwest Representative); Stephanie Glance, North Carolina State University (Assistant Coaches Representative); Bonnie Henrickson, University of Kansas (Secretary); Susan Johnson, Georgetown College (NAIA Representative); Wendy Larry, Old Dominion University (Past President); Dianne Nolan, Fairfield University (Treasurer); Gie Parsons, Clarion University (Division II/Group I Representative); Pam Ruder, Southwestern University (Division III/At-Large); Debbie Ryan, University of Virginia (Division I/East Representative); Timothy Shea, Salem State College (Division III Legislative Chair); and Julie Wilhoit, Loyola Marymount University (NCAA Division I/West Representative).
The WBCA Board of Directors develop policies, procedures and regulations for the operation of the organization; to monitor the organization's financial health, programs and overall performance and to provide the chief executive officer with the resources to the needs of those the organization serves.
Founded in 1981, the WBCA promotes women's basketball by unifying coaches at all levels to develop a reputable identity for the sport and to foster and promote the development of the game in all of its aspects as an amateur sport for women and girls.
