Sooners Set for Big Series in Missouri

Sooners Fall to Wildcats, 8-5

May 06, 2005 | Baseball

MANHATTAN, Kan. The University of Oklahoma baseball team (24-21, 7-12 Big 12) lost 8-5 to Kansas State (25-20, 8-14 Big 12) at Tointon Family Stadium in the first of a three-game series Friday night.

The Sooners jumped out to a 3-0 lead by the third inning, but could not contain Kansas State during a sloppy fourth that saw five Wildcat runs score.

“Kansas State capitalized on our mistakes and that was all it took to win tonight,” OU head coach Sunny Golloway said.

“We'll bounce back tomorrow and play as well as we can.”

Box Score

OU starting pitcher Daniel McCutchen (2-4) retired 10 straight batters in order before KSU's Brandon Farr started a frenzy of action with a double to lead off the inning. McCutchen hit the next batter and a single-error-single-error series for the next four Wildcats eventually ended OU's hopes for a series sweep.

Kansas State's Chase Mitchell (6-5) picked up the win, pitching 8 1/3 innings and allowing five runs on seven hits and two walks.

The Sooners tried to mount a comeback, scoring runs from solo shots by Ryan Rohlinger in the seventh and Scott Rooker in the ninth, but fell just short.

Wildcat Bryan Peterson earned his fifth save of the season, forcing a ground out from Russell Raley with the bases loaded to end the game.

Game two of the series begins Saturday, May 7, at 2:00 p.m.
