Golfers Fighting More Than Regional Competition

May 19, 2005 | Men's Golf

SOUTH BEND, Ind. The Sooners had more to battle than just 26 teams during the first round of the NCAA Central Regional, which was suspended due to darkness with 12 teams still on the course.

Ninth-seeded Oklahoma (+25) is currently in 24th place, 24 strokes behind leader Tulsa and 15 strokes away from the tenth-place qualifying position for the national championships.

Delayed by thunderstorms that plagued the Great Lakes region all day Thursday, the OU men's golf team had more to battle than poor course conditions as three of the five members were stricken with food poisoning.

Freshman Phillip Bryan currently leads the Sooners. The Mustang, Okla., native is tied for 71st, carding a 61 (+4) through 15 holes played.

Anthony Kim is tied for 96th with a 63 (+6) after 15 and may end his streak of nine consecutive rounds of par or better.

Justin Fraley, Shawn LaFontaine and Nick Sheedy have completed 16 holes. Fraley is tied for 109th at 7 over with a 68. LaFontaine is 8 over and Sheedy is 9 over.

Friday's weather looks to improve. The forecast calls for partly cloudy skies, a high of 71 degrees and 10 to 20 mile per hour winds from the northeast.

The remainder of the first round will resume Friday at 6:45 a.m. prior to second round play scheduled to begin immediately afterward.

Live scoring will be available on Golfstat.com. Full results and a recap will be available on SoonerSports.com shortly following each round's conclusion.
