Sooners Fall, 10-6, in Second Game to Tigers

April 23, 2005 | Baseball

COLUMBIA, Mo. -- After winning a ten-inning affair to start off the day, the Sooners could not hold onto a four-run lead in the second game, falling 10-6 to No. 17 Missouri at Taylor Stadium on Saturday.

OU held a 4-0 advantage after its at-bat in the fifth inning and starter Steven Guerra had retired 10 consecutive Tigers before the opposition cut the lead to one with three runs in the bottom of the frame. Missouri would go on to score seven more runs in the final three innings to cruise to the victory and even the series at one game apiece.

The Sooners cut the lead to 8-6 in the eighth inning, after a two-run double by Aaron Ivey, but the Tigers countered in the bottom half of the inning with two more tallies.

Box Score: Missouri 10, Oklahoma 6

Steven Guerra took the loss for the Sooners to fall to 4-4 on the season while Missouri's Nick Admire improved to 2-0 and Andrew Johnston recorded his second save of the season.

OU jumped out on top with single runs in the second and fourth frames as it looked like Guerra would cruise to his fifth win of the season. But after Ryan Rohlinger hit a two-run bomb to right field in the fifth inning, the Sooners offense was silent until the eighth. Ivey added his first RBI of the game in the second frame, while Matt Bose drove in the Sooners' run in the fourth.

Ivey finished the game with a 2-for-3 day that included a double, triple and three RBI. Kevin Smith also collected two hits, as the Sooners pounded out 11 base knocks, but the Tigers out hit the Sooners for the second consecutive game with 13 in the second game.

Guerra lasted five innings and was tagged for five earned runs on seven hits while striking out four Tigers.

Missouri's Hunter Mense and Derek Chambers combined for five hits and six RBI to lead Missouri.

The Sooners won earlier in the day in ten innings, 2-1, after Friday's game was suspended due to inclement weather and completed on Saturday.

With the loss, OU falls to 22-16 overall and 6-8 in Big 12 action while Missouri jumps to 29-10 and 9-5. The rubber match of the series is scheduled for a 1 p.m. start on Sunday with OU's Brad Burns (2-1, 3.83 ERA) throwing opposite MU's Doug Mathis (3-2, 2.75 ERA).
