March 05, 2005 | Women's Tennis
NORMAN, Okla. The Oklahoma women's tennis team lost its Big 12 opener to Nebraska, 5-2, at the Woods Tennis Indoor Center in Lincoln, Neb., Saturday. OU, currently ranked No. 40 in the ITA poll, moves to 7-4 on the season while Nebraska improves to 12-2 overall and 3-2 in the Big 12. Oklahoma faced its toughest top-25 match up they've seen all season with No. 18 Gitte Osterman in singles and the No. 23 pair of Osterman and Katie Garcia in doubles.
After losing the doubles point, the Sooners fought hard to claim two of the six singles matches. Freshman Christi Baxley continued her hot streak at No. 6 singles by defeating Nebraska's Garcia in straight sets, 6-1, 6-3. Baxley moves to 7-1 in singles this spring and 6-1 at the No. 6 slot.
Also earning a point for the Sooners was senior Beth Griffin at the No. 3 position. Griffin challenged Nebraska's Ewelina Skaza and won the first set in a 7-6 tiebreaker. Skaza claimed the second set 6-3, but Griffin bounced back to win the match with a 1-0 (10-2) third set. Griffin claimed her sixth win of the season to improve her record to 6-4 this spring.
The Sooners continue Big 12 action with Iowa State on Sunday, March 6 at 10 a.m. in Des Moines, Iowa.
