Softball Loses Clearwater Invitational Finale

February 06, 2005 | Softball

CLEARWATER, Fla.   The No. 4 Oklahoma softball team fell to 2-3 on the young season after being defeated by DePaul (3-2), 4-1, on Sunday afternoon at the Clearwater Invitational (Fla.).  OU's offense and defense couldn't back up a trio of Sooners, who turned in strong pitching performances.

DePaul pulled ahead in their first at bat thanks to an uncharacteristic error by OU catcher Heather Scaglione.  Scaglione's throw down to third on a steal by DePaul leadoff hitter Dana Kenney sailed into the left field allowing Kenney to trot home with the game's first run.

A two-run single by Linda Secka put the Blue Demons ahead 3-0 in the sixth inning.  OU's defense was again the culprit in the Blue Demon rally.  Scaglione had the lead runner picked off of second base when the OU infield botched the ensuing run down.  The next pitch by reliever Nicole Denes was laced by Secka for two runs.  DePaul added an insurance run on a fielder's choice and had the game in hand at 4-0.

Box Score

The Sooners offense made an appearance in the sixth inning.  Senior Christina Enea led off with a single and would come around to score on a single by pinch hitter Kami Keiter, who is hitting .429.  The sixth inning rally stopped there despite OU having a pair of runners in scoring position.

OU's pitching staff was the Sooners' one consistent component all weekend.  It was freshman Jadyn Smith's turn to impress on Sunday.  In her first career start, Smith threw five innings allowing two hits, two runs (one earned) and striking out two.  Despite her efforts, Smith took the loss and fell to 0-1 on her rookie campaign.

After scoring 18 runs in its first two games, OU had just two runs and six hits in its final three contests at the Clearwater Invitational.

OU will return to non-conference action next weekend when they enter the Houston Hilton Classic.  The Sooners begin play Friday, Feb. 11, against No. 12 Alabama at Noon (CST) from the Cougar Softball Complex.
