February 20, 2005 | Wrestling

STILLWATER, Okla.    The University of Oklahoma wrestling team was defeated by top-ranked Oklahoma State, 18-13, in front of 8,697 people in Stillwater, Okla., in the Gallagher-Ida Arena, Sunday.  OU won four out of 10 matches and earned the only major decision of the dual.

“We had are chances, coming into this meet I really thought we were going to win,” said head coach Jack Spates. “We knew it was going to be tough, and I thought t we had our opportunity.”

The bottom line is that we had our opportunities to win and just didn't make it happen.”

At 125 pounds Sam Hazewinkel (32-0) started the Sooners out with a triumph over No. 17 Coleman Scott by decision, 6-2.  The Cowboys retaliated with a win by decision, 8-4, at 133 pounds to tie the team score 3-3. Second-ranked Teyon Ware regained control for OU and defeated Ronnie Delk by decision, 7-3. Again OSU counteracted and tied the score 6-6 with a win at 149 pounds and took a 12-6 led with wins at 157 and 165 pounds.

“We like starting at 125 pounds because Sam's a warrior out on the mat. He comes out and wrestles every match, so it's a nice start for us,” added Spates. “Joe Comparin did a great job at 133, he's been out since the National Duals and he battled hard against a great kid.”

I thought Teyon did an exceptional job, he got behind, kept his composure, battled back and took control of the match.”

At 174 pounds OSU's Chris Pendleton looked for revenge against OU's E.K. Waldhaus. Top-ranked Pendleton lost his only regular season match to Waldhaus by decision, 11-10, in the first Bedlam series in Norman, Okla. This time Pendleton defeated Waldhaus by a 8-3 decision.

As the Sooners entered the 184-pound match the Cowboys had the led, 15-6. After a slow first period, Justin Dyer scored the first points with an escape in the beginning of the second period and a takedown at the end. In the third period Dyer gave up an escape, but counteracted with a takedown and a three-point nearfall. With 2:01 of riding time Dyer earned the only major decision of the day and his fourth of the season to put the Sooners back in the match, 15-10.

At 197 pounds Joel Flaggert came out strong and scored the first takedown to lead 2-1 at the end of the second period. With 1:56 riding time No. 18 Flaggert defeated Rusty Blackmon by decision, 3-1.

The dual came down to the heavyweight match. Senior Joel Tapler (3-0) fought top-ranked Steve Mocco (29-0), but fell short and lost by decision, 10-3.

The Sooners will travel to East Lansing, Mich., to compete in their last season dual against No. 12 Michigan State on Friday, Feb. 25, at 7 p.m. at the Jenison Field House.
