NORMAN, Okla. After losing its last three duals, the No. 24 Oklahoma women's tennis team got back to its winning ways Sunday after defeating Montana State, 5-2, at the Lobo Tennis Club in Albuquerque, N.M. The Sooners swept the doubles and claimed four singles wins for the victory. The Sooners improve to 6-3 while the Bobcats fall to 3-8.
OU started off hot dominating doubles action. Seniors Beth Griffin and Jessica Braver teamed up at No. 1 doubles to defeat MSU's Ivette Duran and Anna Hockett, 8-4. At the No. 2 position, the duo of senior Heather Saluri and freshman Chelsea Orr claimed their second straight doubles victory after defeating MSU's Nicole Luetolf and Kathy Clark, 8-4. OU's Irina Lykina and Christi Baxley dominated Vera Vasileva and Remy Clark, 8-2.
The Sooners moved on to singles action where they continued their stellar play. At the top singles position, Lykina dominated Montana State's Luetolf in straight sets, 6-0, 6-2. Griffin claimed a 6-4, 6-3, victory over MSU's Vasileva at the No. 3 position while Braver handily defeated the Bobcats' Duran, 6-1, 6-2. The win marked Braver's first singles victory at the No. 5 position this season. Freshman Christi Baxley recorded her fifth straight singles victory after beating MSU's Clarke, 6-4, 6-1.
After playing the last four matches on the road, the Sooners will return home for a dual in Oklahoma City against Rice Friday, Feb. 25 at 10 a.m.
