Softball Targets Gasso's 500th Win

Softball Slugs Way To Gasso's 500th Win

February 18, 2005 | Softball

NORMAN, Okla.--  Patty Gasso's 500th victory as the head coach of the Oklahoma softball team came in explosive fashion as the Sooners cruised to an 11-1 run rule (five innings) victory in the home opener against Lipscomb on Friday afternoon.  The win improved the Sooners to 1-0 in play at the OU/Nike Classic and 6-4 on the season, while Lipscomb fell to 0-1 and 1-1 overall.

“I feel honored because so many people were involved in this accomplishment,” said Gasso.  “It is a credit to all the players and fellow coaches I have worked with over the years. Our fans have always been tremendous and their applause after the game was very special.  I am glad I could share the moment with them and hopefully I will be here for another 500.”

Patty Gasso has a record of 500-166-1 (.750) in 11 seasons as the head of the OU softball program.  Her career record, which includes four years at Long Beach City College, is 662-224-1 (.746).

Box Score

Senior Christina Enea's two-run homer in the first inning turned out to be all the Sooners needed, but the fireworks didn't stop there.

Sophomore Stacia Aleman hit a grand slam off the left field foul poll in the third inning to push the Sooners advantage to 6-0.  The round tripper was the first of her career, while the four RBI are a career best.

In the top of the fifth inning a pair of RBI by freshman Savannah Long and sophomore Norrelle Dickson put the game at the run-rule minimum (eight runs after five innings) and a two-run single by Kristin Vesely put the Sooners ahead by double digits.

Junior Nicole Denes (2-0) picked up the win before handing off to freshman Jadyn Smith, who threw the final inning.  Denes struck out seven batters while allowing just two hits and one earned run.  Smith worked a perfect 1-2-3 final frame.

The Sooners will continue OU/Nike Classic action at 3:15 p.m. when they finish the tourney doubleheader against Creighton.

Game Notes: Sophmore Jade Prather started for the first time in her career as the center fielder ... Freshman Savannah Long recorded the first RBI of her career when she was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded in the fifth inning ... Junior Kristin Vesely has eight RBI in the last three games.
