Sooners Five Under After Round One

WAIKOLOA, Hawaii  The University of Oklahoma men's golf team is tied for 17th after the first round of the Taylor Made Waikoloa Intercollegiate.

The Sooners recorded their second-best round of the season, finishing day one with a score of 283 (-5).

Sophomore Anthony Kim (La Quinta, Calif.) is tied for 17th individually, four strokes behind three players sharing the lead, after shooting a season-low 68 (-4).

No. 3 Oklahoma State (264, -24) finished the day on top, leading No. 11 Southern Cal by one stroke.

Emmett Turner (Augusta State), Tyler Leon (Oklahoma State) and Tyler Docking (Kansas) shared the lead with scores of 64 (-8).

The No.24/45 Sooners were not the only team struggling with the new, short course. No. 6/8 Texas was 19th of 21 teams with a score of 289 (+1).

Only two teams Hawaii and Rhode Island failed to score below par on the 6,791-yard, par-72 Waikoloa Village Course.

Junior transfer Shawn LaFontaine (Cobourg, Ontario) was the next Sooner on the leaderboard, tied for 59th. The Canadian, in his first tournament as a Sooner, shot one under par at 71.

Carlos Del Moral (Valencia, Spain) and Craig Lurie (Houston, Texas) finished one stroke back from LaFontaine. Lurie's 72 was a season low. Jordi Garca (Castillo, Spain) completed the Sooners' lineup, finishing one over with a round of 73.

Teams enjoyed beautiful weather on the first day. Temperatures remained in the low 80s for most of the afternoon.

Second round action begins at 10:45 a.m. CST (6:45 a.m. local).
