NORMAN, Okla. -- The Oklahoma women's basketball team and Academic Services Department hosted three Special Spectators during the recent home game with TCU. Monica Kroeker, Kady Pletcher and Paige Patrick attended the Sooners' pregame shoot around and meal, in addition to being the recognized halftime guests at the game against the Horned Frogs.
Special Spectators, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization, creates a day of fun and freedom for children with cancer, leukemia, cystic fibrosis and other serious illnesses. By designing this day, we provide these children with a pause from the difficult struggle they face while battling their disease.
Special Spectators, in conjunction with its university partners, builds a day of exciting activities surrounding a college sporting event by arranging for these youngsters to enjoy a special tailgate party, attend a game and participate in game day traditions. In addition, Special Spectators exposes student-athletes to the inspiration and reward of making a powerful contribution by arranging visits to children's hospitals or pediatric units.

“What grace and passion these children have,” said OU head coach Sherri Coale. “They are picture perfect examples of strength. It was a privilege to host Monica, Kady and Paige for an afternoon. They came here as fans of our team and left as heroes of everyone in this program.”
Special Spectators is one of several community related programs that the OU women's basketball team and athletics department takes part in.
“The OU Athletics Department is proud to be a university partner with Special Spectators,” said OU Life Skills Coordinator Jennifer Bond. “It is one of those unique opportunities where everyone involved benefits on several levels.”
