NORMAN, Okla. -- Oklahoma is the No. 2 team in the nation according to the preseason NWCA/InterMat Division I Wrestling Coaches Poll, the official college coaches poll.
“Rankings don't win championships, but they do reflect people's perception of the talent you have and the history you have had in developing athletes,” said head coach Jack Spates.
“We're very excited about the ranking and our guys are working very hard and are committed to improving,” Spates said.
In addition to the No. 2 team ranking, the Sooners have six wrestlers ranked in the top 10 of their respective weight classes with four individuals being ranked No. 5 or higher.
Two-time national champion Teyon Ware, a senior, is No. 1 in the 141-pound weight class. Sophomore Joel Flaggert is No. 2 at 197 pounds, junior Sam Hazewinkel is No. 3 at 125 pounds and junior Matt Storniolo is No. 5 at 149 pounds.
Junior Justin Dyer is No. 8 at 184 pounds and senior Jake Hager is listed No. 6 at heavyweight.
All five Big 12 Conference wrestling teams are ranked in the Top 25. Oklahoma State repeats at No. 1, with Iowa State at No. 7, Missouri at No. 14 and Nebraska at No. 17.
