NORMAN, Okla. In its longest match of the season (2:37), the Oklahoma volleyball squad couldn't hang on as it suffered a 3-2 (21-30, 30-25, 34-32, 24-30, 17-19) loss to Oral Roberts, its final non-conference opponent of the season, at the Cooper Aerobics Center in Tulsa, Okla. The Sooners, stepping out of Big 12 play for the first time in seven matches, dropped their overall record to 5-10 and finalized its non-conference mark to 5-4 for the season. The Golden Eagles extended their record to 9-7.
The Sooners took the lead in the first frame off a Joanna Schmitt kill, but it would be the last time OU would lead as Oral Roberts soared to a 30-21 win. Oklahoma bounced back in the second set and took the lead at 3-2 off an Eliane Santos kill. Oklahoma never trailed and pushed the advantage to 20-15 off another Santos kill and evened up the match with a game-winning ace by Sarah Weiland.

The third set went toe to toe as the Sooners and Golden Eagles battled it out in tiebreaker points. Oklahoma took the lead for the first time at 18-17 off a Santos kill, but ORU gained it back off an Ori Zuzic kill to lead 21-20. The teams battled point for point until Oklahoma took the advantage 33-32 off a Schmitt kill and claimed the third match, 34-32, due to an ORU attack error.
OU was unable to carry its momentum into the fourth set with ORU winning the frame, 30-24, after never trailing a point.
In the final and deciding fifth game, the two squads again fought point for point. Oral Roberts gained the early lead, 3-2, but dropped it after posting consecutive attack errors and OU's Santos serving up an ace to push the Sooners to a 7-6 lead. With the match tied up at 15-15, OU's Gabriela Tonon pounded a kill to give the Sooners a one point advantage. ORU fought back and claimed the next two points off a Danijela Novakovic kill and a Schmitt error. The final tie of the match came at 17-17 off an Anna Stadel kill, but ORU tallied two consecutive kills and claimed the match.
“We didn't come out very strong in the first game,” head coach Santiago Restrepo said. “We played better in the final four games because our intensity picked up. Unfortunately, we let the match slip away tonight as it was a great battle between both schools.”
OU's Schmitt led the Sooners and finished the night with her third double-double of the season on a match-high 22 kills and 10 digs. Also recording double-digit kills were Santos (15), Sarah Weiland (13) and Gabriela Tonon (11). Assisting OU's offense were setters Julie Chester and Rachel Jackson. Running the 6-2 set, Chester tallied 33 and Jackson added 30.
At the net, Oklahoma posted 13.5 blocks with Tonon and Santos each adding five block assists and Stadel contributing four. Libero Hannah Sharp was solid in the back row with a match-high 18 digs.
Oklahoma will look to snap its seven-match losing streak when its hosts No. 23 Texas A&M this Saturday, Oct. 8 inside the Howard McCasland Field House at 7 p.m. The Aggies suffered a 3-2 loss to No. 19 Texas tonight and will also be searching for their first conference win Saturday night.
