Horton at World Championship Selection Camp

October 14, 2005 | Men's Gymnastics

Colorado Springs, Colo.  After the first day of competition at the 2005 World Gymnastics Championships Men's Team Selection Competition, University of Oklahoma gymnast Jonathan Horton, is in first place on the high bar (9.6), third on the vault (9.175, 9.5) and sixth on the floor exercise (8.325).

“Jonathan performed a difficult routine on the high bar and stuck the landing, so that was exciting for him,” said OU head coach Mark Williams.  “He's in contention for a spot on the team, but has to continue his excellence on the high bar and pick up his performance on the floor exercise and vault.”

The second day of competition is slated for Sunday at 1 p.m. at the United States Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs, Colo.

The field for the event includes 19 of the United States' best male gymnasts vying for the six-man team that will compete in the 2005 World Championships, Nov. 21-27 in Melbourne, Australia.  The format for this year's World Championships features all-around and individual event competition.

Because of the emphasis on individual events, the Men's Selection Committee will use the results of the two-day meet to name the remaining five members of the men's team for the World Championships, as well as designate which athletes will compete in which events. The 2005 U.S. Men's World Championships Team will be announced on Oct. 17.
