Oklahoma Wrestling Squeaks By Army, 19-12

MIDWEST CITY, Okla. -- The tenth-ranked Oklahoma wrestling team defeated No. 24 Army, 19-12, Thursday night at Midwest City High School. The Sooners won six matches with sophomore Sam Hazewinkel (125) earning the only major decision of the night.

Beginning the dual at 184 pounds Oklahoma started off slow with loses at 184 and 197 pounds. Heavyweight Jake Hager got the Sooners back on track with a 5-0 decision over Joe Forsman.

“I give kudos to Army for out hustling and out wrestling us,” said head coach Jake Spates. “They controlled the time and they controlled the action. We have to be better.”

“We have wrestled hard and well in every competition this year. This was the first time we have not wrestled up to our potential.”

At 125 pounds Hazewinkel defeated Travis Featurestone by a 18-6 major decision, which gave the Sooners a 7-6 led. Oklahoma went on to win by decision at 133, 141, 157 and 174.

“Sam was magnificent,” said Spates. “The one thing about Sam is you never wonder whether he is going to come to wrestle.”

“He wrestles the same if he is competing against the national champion or if he is wrestling against a guy that has never wrestled before,” said Spates. “That's what we preach and Sam modeled it.”

Hazewinkel (125) and junior Teyon Ware (141) continue their undefeated season. Hazewinkel with a season record of 14-0 and Ware with 12-0.

The Sooners will travel to Arlington, Texas, for the Lone Star Duals on Saturday, Jan. 8. This will be the fourth tournament the Sooners have wrestled in this season.
