NORMAN, Okla. The University of Oklahoma men's tennis team picked up it's second consecutive win when the Sooners defeated DePaul 5-2 at the Combe Indoor Tennis Center in Chicago, Ill in opening weekend action Sunday. The Sooners began strong by taking four of six singles matches and two doubles. OU improved to 2-0, while DePaul fell to 2-3.
In doubles, junior Tommy Garrison and senior Ondrej Fukala teamed up for another win at No. 1 doubles over Henderson and Davidson, 8-6. Junior Alexei Ivanov and freshmen Ryan Thomas defeated Inchausted and Wang at the No. 3 position to clinch the doubles point for the Sooners.
The Sooners took four of the six singles matches, led by Fukala who defeated Robert Kotroczo in a straight set, 6-3, 3-0. Oklahoma's next win came from Ivanov who beat George Wang in a hard fought three-set match, 6-3, 3-6, 7-5. The Sooners then needed two more singles matches for the victory. Garrison and newcomer Thomas both posted straight set victories at No. 4 and No. 6 singles respectively, to defeat the Blue Demons.
Up next the Sooners face the Oral Roberts Golden Eagles in Tulsa on Friday, Feb. 4, at 6 p.m.
The first home match for the Sooners is March 5 against Navy at 12 p.m.
