Sooners set to participate in the Nike Classic and Junkanoo Jam in the Bahamas

NORMAN, Okla. With five consecutive NCAA appearances to her credit, head coach Sherri Coale and her Sooners will have an equally challenging task for the 2004-05 campaign based on the women's basketball  schedule that was announced Sunday. OU will face 13 teams that participated in postseason action and three teams that advanced to at least the NCAA Sweet 16 a year ago.

After ending last year ranked 11th in the country, the Sooners will host 15 home games including an ESPN2 broadcast with Kansas State on Sunday, Feb. 13, at 2 p.m. All together, OU will appear nine times on television. As part of the Big 12 Conference Fox Sports package, Oklahoma has three FSN games as well as five local Sooner Sports Network broadcasts.

“We have a schedule that challenges us early and hopefully prepares us for the rigorous Big 12 that awaits in January,” said Coale. “We have five pre-conference home contests and a very challenging road schedule that provides opportunities for us to gauge ourselves against several top 25 teams.”

Over the Thanksgiving break, the Sooners will travel to the Grand Bahamas Island as one of four teams competing in the Junkanoo Jam on Nov. 26-27. OU opens tournament action against Akron on Nov. 26, and will face either Florida or Iowa the following day. Florida and Iowa participated in the 2004 NCAA Tournament and finished fourth in the Southeastern and Big Ten Conferences, respectively.

Oklahoma will be one of four state universities participating in the annual Bertha Teague Classic.  Tulsa, Oklahoma State and Oral Roberts completes the field that will be in action at  the Mabee Center on the campus of ORU on Dec. 4 in Tulsa. The Sooners are 11-0 when competing in the Bertha Teague Classic over the last six years.

OU also has been invited to participated in the prestigious Nike Classic against national powerhouse Louisiana Tech. That showdown is slated for Dec. 18, in Eugene, Ore., and will be televised on FSN. Tech finished the 2004 season with an overall record of 29-3 and returns two starters and seven letterwinners to this year's squad. OU then travels to Utah for a Dec. 21 game in Salt Lake City. Oklahoma defeated the then nationally-ranked Utes, 73-65, last season in Norman.

Also highlighting OU's non-conference schedule this season will be home matchups against Southeast Missouri State (Nov. 19), Texas State (Nov. 21), Lamar (Dec. 2), Southwest Missouri (Dec. 11) and Henderson State (Dec. 29). The Sooners will also travel to TCU on Dec. 9. TCU has participated in four straight NCAA Championships and is coming off a 25-7 season.

Oklahoma will attempt to capture its fourth Big 12 Conference regular season title against a league that saw seven teams make last year's NCAA Tournament (Baylor, Colorado, Kansas State, Missouri, Texas, Texas Tech and Oklahoma) and two teams participated in the WNIT (Nebraska and Iowa State).

The Sooners will face South Division foes Baylor, Oklahoma State, Texas, Texas A&M and Texas Tech twice and will play each member of the North Division once. North Division foes visiting Lloyd Noble Center are Kansas State (Feb. 1), Iowa State (Feb. 22) and Missouri (Feb. 26).
