NORMAN, Okla. The Oklahoma women's cross country team won the Southern Stampede in Joplin, Mo., today by one point over 18th-ranked Arkansas.

In her first race of the season, sophomore Jessica Eldridge (Broken Arrow, Okla.) finished second in the women's 5k race as the Sooners squeaked by the Razorbacks 78-79. Eldridge finished in 16 minutes, 41.96 seconds, cutting over 30 seconds from her previous career best.

In the men's 8k race, sophomore Jason Coleman (Watonga, Okla.) finished in the top 10 again with a career-best run of 24:58.38, leading the men to a fourth-place overall finish.

Eldridge's time is the fourth fastest women's 5k mark in school history. It was also the first time the Sooner women had ever won in a field greater than 12 teams.

“The women had a great finish,” OU head coach Rodney Rothoff said, “and I was very pleased with the fourth-place run by the men. Jessica took off from where she left in track.”

Eldridge, sophomores Nicola Maye (Summerfield, Jamaica), Catherine Odell (Enid, Okla.), Aja Clark (Ardmore, Okla.) and senior team captain Jackie Dubois (Lawrence, Kan.) were the scoring five for OU.

“The teams at this race were very competitive,” Rothoff said. “Today's effort definitely puts us one step closer to the goals we set for ourselves.”

Maye scored her fifth-career top-10 with a ninth-place run out of 216 competitors.

Dubois, who finished 32nd, also broke her personal record by two minutes with an incredible effort to keep her team in the lead.

“Jackie was incredible,” Rothoff said. “I think she really proved something today.”

Former Jenks High School teammates, sophomore Andrea Bonner (Tulsa, Okla.) and junior Julie Swagerty (Tulsa, Okla.), finished 61st and 64th, respectively. Senior Emily Leonard (Plano, Texas) finished at 186th.

For the men, junior Blake Culp (Bartlesville, Okla.), sophomore Tyler Schmiedeberg (Edmond, Okla.), redshirt freshman Jason Penland (Flower Mound, Texas) and senior Andrew Call (Norman, Okla.) rounded out the five scorers.

“The men ran much better than they did at the last meet,” Rothoff said. “However, we still need to work on staying together as a group.”

The weather in Joplin was a sunny 81 degrees for the women's start at 9 a.m. Clouds and light rain moved in just as the men finished their race.

“It was a very fast race in fairly warm conditions,” Rothoff said.

Sophomore Salah Hussein (Toronto, Ontario), junior Billy Grona (Sand Springs, Okla.), senior Aldwyn Sappleton (Clarendon, Jamaica) and junior John Mullholland (Norman, Okla.) also competed for the men.

The times for Culp (25:27), Penland (26:07), Grona (26:49) are personal records. It is the second consecutive race that these three have set career-best marks. Clark also set a personal record.

The Sooners have next weekend off before heading to South Bend, Ind., for the Notre Dame Invitational Friday, Oct. 1.
