NORMAN, Okla. -- The fact that the OU football season is in full swing didn't keep the men's basketball team off one of Bob Stoops' practice fields Tuesday afternoon.
As part of their preseason conditioning program, Kelvin Sampson's Sooners hit the football team's artificial turf immediately south of the Barry Switzer Center for an intense 45-minute workout. The outside temperature was 90 degrees, but the thermometer said conditions were warmer on the turf.
Strength coach Darby Rich offered no solace in administering Tuesday's grueling program.
When asked about the seemingly endless series of short and long distance sprints, junior forward Kevin Bookout said, "This is the worst part about being a basketball player. But," he added, "it's necessary and we know it. The month of September is critical to our success in March."
The Sooners, who begin practice on Oct. 16, have also been partaking in 6 a.m. weightlifting sessions several times a week.
