Oklahoma has posted its highest finish ever in the United States Sports Academy Directors' Cup final standings. OU was No. 15 nationally, which also represents the best finish ever by a school based in Oklahoma.
The Sooners scored 728.75 points, the second-best total among Big 12 Conference schools. Texas came in at No. 10. Other Big 12 schools finished this way: No. 16 Texas A&M, No. 32 Nebraska, No. 36 Oklahoma State, No. 46 Missouri, No. 47 Baylor, No. 49 Colorado, No. 57 Kansas State, No. 62. Texas Tech, No. 65 Kansas and No. 123 Iowa State.
Oklahoma sent entire teams or representatives to post-season play in 18 of 20 sports in the recently completed academic year. Eight Sooner programs were ranked among the nation's top 25 at season's end.
“This year really revealed the depth we are developing,” said OU Athletics Director Joe Castiglione. “We're building a program that gives all our student-athletes a chance to excel. Of course, we have higher goals for our program, but we take pride in the fact that we led the Big 12 Conference with a 74 percent graduation rate and had the competitive success too. Overall, we're making excellent progress.”
The previous bests by a school from Oklahoma also came from OU. The Sooners were No. 17 in 2002 and No. 18 in 2001. OU is the only school from the Sooner State ever to crack the top 20. Oklahoma has been among the top 25 in five consecutive years.
Stanford won the title for the award, which began in 1994, for a 10th straight year.
Developed as a joint effort between USA TODAY and NACDA, the United States Sports Academy Directors' Cup program is the only all-sports competition that recognizes the institution in each of the four categories with the best overall athletics program. Of the 327 eligible colleges and universities in the NCAA Division I, a total of 278 (85 percent) scored points in the United States Sports Academy Directors' Cup competition.
