Senior pitchers Casey Brown and Mike Swindell and junior hurler Daniel McCutchen rounded out the University of Oklahoma's selections in the 2004 Major League Baseball First-Year Player Draft on Tuesday. Brown was the first Sooner chosen on the second day of the draft by the Houston Astros who made the righthander their 27th round pick. Fellow righty, Swindell, was taken by the New York Mets in the very next round with the organization's 28th round selection. McCutchen immediately followed Swindell in the 28th round as the Tampa Bay Devil Rays' pick.
Brown will join former teammate Ole Sheldon in the Houston organization after the junior first baseman was also chosen by the Astros in the 14th round on Monday. The Stigler, Okla., native began the year as the No. 2 starter in the Sooners' rotation before moving to the bullpen where he excelled as one of the team's top relievers. Brown posted a 3-1 record in a relief role with a staff best 1.54 ERA. He completed his final campaign with a 5-4 record and a 4.80 ERA.
Like Brown, Swindell was also utilized in both starting and relief roles throughout the season. Contrary to Brown's performances, Swindell put up his best numbers as a starter. He received four starting assignments in which he recorded a 2-0 record with a 3.78 ERA. The Wildomar, Calif., native finished the year with a 4-2 mark and a 6.80 ERA.
Aside from a pair of starts during the season, McCutchen was used exclusively in a relief role. He garnered honorable mention All-Big 12 Conference accolades after finishing tied for third in the league in appearances and in a tie for fourth in saves. His save and appearances totals ranked second on the squad behind fellow junior Jarod McAuliff, who was a first team all-conference pick.
He finished his first season in a Sooner uniform with a 4-3 record and a 3.47 ERA.
In addition to the four Sooners taken on the first day of the draft, the seven total Oklahoma products selected in this year's marks the most number of Sooners chosen in a single draft in the last six years.
