19 Sooners Named To Big 12 Academic Teams

NORMAN, Okla. To accompany their second place regular season conference finish and their trip to NCAA postseason, the Oklahoma baseball team also enjoyed some off the field success by having 19 players named to two Big 12 Conference academic teams. Five Sooners were named to the baseball Academic All-Big 12 team, while 14 others were named to the Big 12 Commissioners Honor Roll.

 On the Academic All-Big 12 team, three players garnered first team selections while two more were honored as second team members. Matt Bose, a junior third baseman, made his second appearance on the first team as the marketing major was also honored as a first team member last season.

 Joining Bose on the first team were sophmore Blake Hurlbutt, a university studies major, and senior Mike Swindell, a sociology major, who both made their first appearances on the list. Second team honorees were senior Mark Roberts, a sociology major and junior David Purcey, a marketing major. Both players were first time honorees. 

 Charles Benoit, LaFringe Hayes, Aaron Ivey, Chad Lembeck, Brent Lysander, Daniel McCutchen, Andrew McGuire, Ryan Mottern, Ryan Rohlinger, Scott Rooker, Josh Stinson, Hurlbutt, Roberts and Swindell all were named to the Big 12 Commissioner's Honor Roll.

 This marks the third time for Roberts and second time for Hayes, Hurlbutt, Rooker and Swindell to be named to the Commissioner's Honor Roll.

 Nominated by each institutions director of student-athlete support services and the media relations offices, the baseball academic all-league squad consisted of 29 first-team members combined with 17 on the second team. First team selections have maintained a 3.20 or better GPA, while second team selections have maintained a 3.00 to 3.19.

 To be recognized as a first team member, players must have maintained a grade point average of 3.2 or better (either cumulative or for the two previous semesters) and must have participated in 60 percent of his team's scheduled contests. For a second team member, the GPA requirements are for those who have a 3.00 to 3.19 and meet the participation requirements. As for pitchers they must have pitched at least one inning per game played by the team or have appeared in 35 percent of their team's total games.

 Big 12 Commissioner's Honor Roll selections must have a cumulative GPA of at least a 3.0 for the academic year.
