Softball Targets Gasso's 500th Win

Gasso Inducted Into Long Beach Softball Hall of Fame

June 17, 2004 | Softball

NORMAN, Okla.    Oklahoma softball head Patty Gasso was inducted into the inaugural class of the Long Beach Baseball and Softball Hall of Fame last month.  The city of Long Beach and the Hall of Fame executive committee chose Gasso to be among 31 athletes, coaches and administrators in the first class for the exclusive club.

Gasso is a native of Southern California, who completed her undergraduate work at Long Beach State and began her head coaching career at Long Beach City College.  During her time at LBCC (1990-94) she racked up a 161-59 record while also claiming four conference titles and two regionals titles.  Gasso left her LBCC post to take the reigns at OU, where she has made the Sooners into a national powerhouse since her first year in 1995.

“I am from Long Beach, so this is very special to me,” said Gasso.  “My times at Long Beach City College were some of the best of my life. It is a big deal to me because some of my best friends are still there and they put me up for this award.  It is an extreme honor to be in the company of so many great individuals who have influenced the city of Long Beach and the growth of both sports.”

Hall of Fame program

Gasso did indeed enter the hall with a prestigious class.  Ten of the 14 baseball inductees were former major leaguers, including former San Diego Padre legend and current San Diego State head coach Tony Gwynn. Gasso was one of 17 individuals and one of only three coaches to enter the Softball Hall of Fame.

The ceremony took place on May 7 at Blair Field, the home diamond of the Long Beach State Dirtbags.  Blair Field is the new home to the Long Beach Baseball Hall of Fame, and the adjoining Joe Rodgers Softball Field is the home to the Softball Hall of Fame.

It is not the first hometown honor of the year for Gasso, who was also inducted into the Long Beach City College Hall of Champions on March 26.  Kami Keiter, the ace on Gasso's pitching staff, was inducted into the Colorado Sportswomen Hall of Fame on March 14.
