June 01, 2004 | Men's Golf
HOT SPRINGS, Va. -- The Oklahoma men's golf team continued its hot postseason play and landed in 10th place after the first round of action at the NCAA Championships in Hot Springs, Va., on Tuesday.
The Sooners sit just seven strokes behind the team leader California (279) with a score of 286. After 18 holes of play, OU leads all Big 12 teams and is just three strokes shy of the top five at the Homestead Resort's Cascasdes Golf Course (par 70, 6,679 yards).
OU, which is six strokes over par, is right behind a log jam of three teams at five over. Last year's NCAA champion, Clemson, as well as Florida and Georgia are one stroke in front of the Sooners. Among the Big 12 schools in competition, Texas is the closest to OU. The Longhorns are eight over par and are in 11th place, one spot below OU. Texas A&M is 12 strokes off the pace at 11 over, while Oklahoma State is a spot down at 12-over par.
Pacing OU is senior Blake Martin (70), who was even on the day and is tied for 20th. He is five strokes behind Cal's Jeff Hood, who leads the individual competition thanks to an opening-round 65 (-5).
Carlos Del Moral, Martin Flores and Anthony Kim follow Martin in succession. Del Moral shot a one-over 71 and is tied for 30th place. Flores swung a 72 (+2) and is tied for 51st. Kim, the Big 12 Newcomer of the Year, clubbed a three-over 73 and is tied for 64th.
Rounding out the Sooners' starting lineup of five is Doug Manor, who recorded an 81 and is ranked 153.
The field is made up of 30 Division I teams and 156 individual golfers. The top 86 finishers in Tuesday action are separated by just eight strokes.
