No. 13 Oklahoma Falls 6-5 To Texas Tech In Extra Innings

Sooners Take Game Two From Wildcats, 11-3

May 08, 2004 | Baseball

NORMAN, Okla. -- The 19th-ranked Oklahoma Sooners played more of the same Saturday afternoon at L. Dale Mitchell Park, beating Kansas State 11-3.

Freshman catcher Josh Stinson (1-for-3) and senior right fielder Andrew McGuire (3-for-5) hit back-to-back home runs in the fifth inning to seal a victory for the Sooners.

Junior starting pitcher David Purcey (6-4) retired 17 of his first 22 batters before the Wildcats got on the scoreboard in the top of the sixth. Purcey was relieved after seven innings after giving up only five hits and one earned run.

"Purcey was Purcey," said OU head coach Larry Cochell. "He pitched really well today, but not as sharp as he's capable of doing. The (Kansas State) pitcher had some good stuff, too. He just made some mistakes that we were able to capitalize on."

"We've really bounced back from Bedlam," said Purcey. "We are all hitting really well right now and doing our jobs in the field."

Oklahoma plated its first runner in the bottom of the third when sophomore shortstop Ryan Rohlinger (1-for-4) scored off of junior third baseman Matt Bose's (0-for-2) sacrifice fly.

The Sooners opened up their offense in the bottom of the fifth as junior first baseman Ole Sheldon (2-for-5) doubled to left field for his 25th multi-hit game of the season and scored on junior designated hitter Eric Thornton's (3-for-3) single to right. Two batters later, Stinson knocked the first pitch over the left-center fence scoring Thornton, Bose and himself. McGuire was next up and hit a solo home run off of his first pitch down the right field baseline.

Junior center fielder Jeff Scuderi (1-for-2) walked to bring up sophomore left fielder Scott Rooker (1-for-5), who singled to left. Scuderi scored on a sacrifice fly by sophomore second baseman Russell Raley (0-for-3).

"There's good feeling in this club that anyone at the plate can get a hit," commented Cochell. "Stinson gets better and better with each game. He's just a freshman and you have to be patient and live with the growing pains. There's alot of pressure at that position."

Over the first two games of the series, Stinson is 3-for-5 with seven RBI, including two home runs.

Kansas State chalked up one run in each of the next two innings before the Sooners hammered back with a 3-run bottom of the seventh. McGuire scored on an a throwing error by the Wildcat catcher as he was stealing third base. Raley and Scuderi then scored on a shot to left by Rohlinger.

The Wildcats scored another run in the top of the eighth. Oklahoma answered back in the bottom of the frame with its last run when sophomore pinch runner LaFringe Hayes scored on a wild pitch.

The Sooners have won the last two games by a combined score of 32-9. Oklahoma swept last year's series with Kansas State with a combined score of 34-22. The Sooners are now 166-61-1 all-time versus the Wildcats, including a 72-37 record in Norman.

The final game of the series will start on Sunday at 1 p.m. at L. Dale Mitchell Park. Senior right-hander Mike Swindell (3-2) is projected to start for the Sooners, while senior righthanded pitcher Jim Ripley (4-5) will start for Kansas State.
