Baseball Takes Series With 2-1 Victory at Nebraska

May 23, 2004 | Baseball

LINCOLN, Neb. -- With two Huskers in scoring position with one out in the bottom of the ninth inning, Oklahoma junior reliever Daniel McCutchen closed out the game for a 2-1 victory over Nebraska in both team's regular season finale Sunday afternoon at Haymarket Park.

Junior pitcher Jarod McAuliff, who suffered the game two loss on Saturday, picked up his sixth victory of the season in only his third start of the year. McCutchen earned his fifth save of the year by holding the Sooner lead over the final two frames.

Oklahoma closed out the regular season with a 36-20 overall mark and a 19-8 record in the Big 12, while Nebraska ended the season 35-21 with an 11-16 mark in league play.

The Sooners recovered from their shutout from the day before by getting on the scoreboard early with one first inning run. Leadoff hitter senior rightfielder Andrew McGuire (0-for-2) and sophomore second baseman Russell Raley (2-for-3) both reached base to begin the game on a walk and base hit to right field, respectively. McGuire, who moved over to third base on Raley's single, scored in the next at bat as junior first baseman Ole Sheldon (0-for-4) grounded into a double play.

Oklahoma took a 2-0 advantage in the top of the third inning by scoring its leadoff hitter for the second time in the game. Junior centerfielder Jeff Scuderi (1-for-4) led off the frame by beating out a bunt single that he laid down the third base line. Following Raley's second hit of the contest, Scuderi came home on a two base error by a ball put in play by Sheldon.

Similarly to Saturday's game, McAuliff allowed a base hit in the first inning and then kept the Cornhuskers hitless until a single by leftfielder Jesse Boyer with two outs in the fifth inning. Nebraska threatened after Boyer swiped second base, but Sheldon smothered a shot down the first base line and completed the out at first base to get the Sooners out of the jam.

McAuliff left the game after working five full frames and only giving up the two hits, allowing only one walk and striking out three. McAuliff, OU's career appearance leader, made his 34th appearance of the year which leaves him one shy of tying his career best and is three away from breaking the school record of 36 set by former Sooners Jeff Bajenaru (2000) and Bucky Buckles (1994).

The Cornhuskers put together their second straight threat in the sixth inning as they loaded the bases with a pair of walks and a single by first baseman Curtis Ledbetter. However, senior reliever Mike Swindell, who began the inning, forced rightfielder Daniel Bruce to fly out for the final out of the inning as the Sooners continued to hold on to the 2-0 lead.

Nebraska finally got on the scoreboard in the bottom of the eighth inning as a leadoff double by second baseman Jake Mullinax came around to score on a groundout by Ledbetter. McCutchen was responsible for giving up Nebraska's only run of the game.

The Sooners will own the No. 2 seed, their highest seeding in program history, in the upcoming Phillips 66 Big 12 Conference Tournament which begins on Wednesday at Ameriquest Field in Arlington, Texas. They will face seventh seeded Missouri at 1 p.m.
