April 29, 2004 | Men's Golf
NORMAN, Okla. Freshmen Anthony Kim (La Quinta, Calif.) and Carlos Del Moral (Valencia, Spain) were among the 10 golfers named to the All-Big 12 Conference Men's Golf Team as released by the league office on Thursday. This marks the first time in OU men's golf history that two freshmen were named to the All-Big 12 squad. Kim was also voted Big 12 Newcomer of the Year, the first time a Sooner has captured that award. The all-conference honors and individual awards were voted on by the league head coaches.
Kim leads the Sooners with a 71.7 stroke average, fifth best in the Big 12, and became the first OU freshman to win a tournament since 1988 when he captured medalist honors at the Taylor Made Waikoloa Intergollegiate in February. He finished in the the top 20 seven times in his rookie campaign and only finished out of the top 20 twice in nine tournaments. The Big 12 Golfer of the Month for Februrary recently placed second at the Big 12 Championship.
Del Moral joined the Sooners in February and posted a 72.4 stroke average in the six tournaments in which he competed. His season average places him second on the team and 10th best in the Big 12. Del Moral tied for fourth at The Hall of Fame Invitational in March and tied for 11th place in at the Big 12 Championship.
Kim and Del Moral will return to action with the rest of the Sooners May 19-21, at the NCAA Central Regional, in West Lafayette, Ind, at the Brick Boilermaker Complex.
