Mens Golf Finishes in Second Place at Big 12 Championships

April 27, 2004 | Men's Golf

HUTCHINSON, Kan. -- The Oklahoma men's golf team finished in the second place at the Big 12 Championships, which was played at the Prairie Dunes Country Club (par-70, 6,598) in Hutchinson, Kansas.  OU shot a third-round best of 283 (+3) and moved up two spots on the final day of action to finish behind Texas.

"I am very pleased at the way we played today. We fought hard and put ourselves in a position to win," head coach Jim Ragan said. "We showed a great deal of determination in this tournament."

As a team, Oklahoma had four golfers finish in the top-15. Freshman Anthony Kim (La Quinta, Calif.) led the Sooners by shooting the second-best round of the tournament (67) and moved up nine spots to finish in second place.  Kim equaled his career low for the fourth time this season.

"Anthony Kim came through in the clutch. He hit some great shots. I am extremely pleased with his tournament," Ragan said.

Kim's second place finish is the highest by a Sooner since John Kidwell landed in the same spot after 2002's Big 12 Championship.  The team's combined finish of second place is the highest since 2001, when they tied for second.

Senior Martin Flores (Mansfield, Texas) also climbed nine spots on the leader board by shooting a 72 (+2) in the final round. Flores finished in a tie for 13th place.  Flores shot a three-round total of 221 (+11) in the final conference tournament of his career.  Rounding out the scoring for the Sooners was senior Doug Manor (Garland, Texas), who finished in 50th with a three-round score of 232 (+22).

Next up for the Sooners are the NCAA Regionals in West LaFayette, Ind.  The Sooners will play in the central regional hosted by Purdue at the Birck Boilermaker Complex, May 19-21.
