Former Oklahoma radio announcer Mike Treps will make a return to the Sooners' baseball broadcast booth to finish off the season as announced by the program on Tuesday. Treps, who was the voice of Sooner baseball broadcasts for 17 years, will replace Jim Byers who is leaving the broadcasts to fill a similar position with the Oklahoma RedHawks. Treps will join the Oklahoma baseball broadcasts beginning with the Oral Roberts contest on March 23.
A 1956 OU graduate, Treps joined the university as the Director of Media Information in 1972. He moved to the athletics department in 1979 as the Director of Sports Information, wearing many hats along the way as well. He contributed to football radio broadcasts for 24 years and was the Sooners' baseball voice for 17 years. Treps was on the broadcast team for four national champions - 1974, 1975 and 1985 football, and 1994 baseball.
An area of the press box at L. Dale Mitchell Park was dedicated in his honor last spring and is now officially referred to as the Mike Treps Media Room.
