March 04, 2004 | Women's Basketball

OU women's basketball earns Academic All-America honors for the third straight year.

Oklahoma senior Caton Hill was named to the 2003-04 Verizon Academic All-America Women's Basketball third team Thursday following a vote by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA).  This is Hill's first Verizon Academic All-America honor. She becomes OU's third Academic All-American in as many years and sixth overall for the women's program.

The Ada, Okla., native, was named to the 2002 and 2004 Verizon Academic All-District VI teams as well as earning three Academic All-Big 12 first team awards. Hill sports a 3.63 overall grade point average in zoology. The pre-med major has appeared on the President's Honor Roll, Dean's List, Sooner Scholar List and Commissioner's Honor Roll numerous times.

Hill is the only OU player, male or female, to score more than 1,500 points, grab 1,000 plus rebounds and pocket 200 or more steals in a career. She surpassed this milestone with nine rebounds, 18 points and three steals against Oklahoma State on Feb. 28. To date, she has netted 1,583 points, 1,011 rebounds and 208 steals.

The 6-1 power forward is Oklahoma's team leader in rebounding with 6.1 boards per game. She also ranks second in scoring with 12.4 points and in assists (1.8) and steals (1.6) per game.

Hill has assisted the Sooners to an overall record of 19-8 and a sixth-place finish in the Big 12 Conference with a 9-7 mark. OU heads to the 2004 Phillips 66 Big 12 Tournament in Dallas, Texas, on Tuesday, March 11, at 8:30 p.m. inside Reunion Arena.

Oklahoma is one of three Big 12 Conference schools to have at least one player earn Academic All-America accolades this season.

Former Sooner great and WNBA All-Star Stacey Dales-Schuman earned first team Verizon Academic All-America honors and was voted the Academic Player of the Year in 2002, while Theresa Schuknecht also earned first team honors a year ago.

The Verizon Academic All-America Teams program recognizes student-athletes who have succeeded on the field and in the classroom. Individuals are selected by votes from CoSIDA, the 1,800-member College Sports Information Directors of America. To be eligible, an athlete must be a varsity starter or key reserve and maintain a cumulative GPA of at least 3.20 on a scale of 4.00.
