I read in a book of quotes the saying “When you find yourself in a hole, the first thing you have to do is quit digging.” I thought it was so appropriate for my current situation. If you are anyway familiar with our team, you would know that along with us struggling I am also not having great performances. With each bad performance I have gotten deeper and deeper into a rut and I have become so frustrated. My frustration has turned into me forcing things, being unaware and worst of all not enjoying myself.
Coach Coale says that I look like I have a huge gorilla on my back and that there is no reason to have him there. I don't know why I have put all this pressure on myself and keep trying to be a player that I am not. Once I realized I was doing this, I expected to pop right out of my rut and be back to my old self. When this didn't happen, I got frustrated even more.
This week is very important because we have had time to concentrate on us and not on an opponent. It is very important for me because I can work on myself as well. I have to work on things I can control. My work ethic, my attitude and my brain have to be top notch so I can slowly climb out of the hole that I have dug.
I now can say I have quit digging and feel good about our practices and our minds. And, every night before I go to bed I read a little note that I wrote to Frank (my gorilla on my back). It is very kind and it asks for him to please get off my back because he is not needed and not helping at all (Did I tell you he is mute?).
Go Sooners!!!
