The 33rd-ranked Oklahoma women's tennis team concluded its Texas road trip Sunday with a nail biting 4-3 victory over No. 46 SMU at Las Colinas Country Club in Dallas, Texas. This was the second straight 4-3 victory for Oklahoma after they defeated No. 45 TCU, 4-3, on Friday. The Sooners move to 7-1 on the season while the Mustangs fall to 6-5.
“This match was just another tough test,” said head coach Mark Johnson. “SMU is a strong team that has had some good wins over ranked opponents, making today's win that much more important.”
Sophomore Joi-lee Beachler (Oklahoma City) proved to be the star for the Sooners against SMU. Beachler's 7-5, 6-3 singles victory over SMU's Brooke Rambally clinched the dual for OU. Fourth-ranked Anda Perianu (Braila, Romania) bounced back against after a tough singles loss Friday with a straight-set victory over SMU's Svetlana Kouzmenko, 6-2, 7-6. Junior Jessica Braver (Edmond, Okla.) came up with OU's third singles point with a two set win over SMU's Halley Rambally, 7-5, 6-2.
The Sooners again dominated the doubles sweeping SMU at all three positions. At No. 1, OU's 28th-ranked pair of Perianu and Heather Saluri (Des Moines, Iowa) defeated SMU's Kit Carson and Svetlana Kouzmenko, 8-4. At the No. 2 spot, Oklahoma's Braver and Irina Lykina (Kazan, Russia) took an 8-2 win over Jenny Langer and Allison Leuszler. OU's undefeated pair of Baker and Bethany Griffin (Amarillo, Texas) moved to 5-0 on the season with a tight 9-8 victory over SMU's Lynsie Jones and Nadia Vaughan at No. 3.
“The doubles was strong, which again turned out to be key. Every match was hard fought and it was great to see Joi-lee (Beachler) step up in her first real match of the spring and clinch the win for us,” said Johnson.
The Sooners open up Big 12 regular season play against Missouri on Saturday, March 6 at the Green Tennis Center in Colombia, Mo., at 2 p.m.
