Women's Tennis Set To Face TCU and SMU

The 28th-ranked Oklahoma women's tennis team (5-1) heads down to Texas this weekend to take on No. 59 TCU (2-5) on Friday, Feb. 27, at the Bayard H. Friedman Tennis Center in Fort Worth, Texas at 2 p.m. The Sooners will follow up with a second dual match against SMU (6-4), on Sunday, Feb. 29, at the Haggar Tennis Stadium in Dallas, Texas.
Last Time Against TCU and SMU
Last season Oklahoma hosted both TCU and SMU. The Sooners defeated TCU in a crucial 4-3 win that led to a six match winning streak for OU. SMU also suffered a similar defeat, going down 5-2 to the Sooners.
Sooners Fall to New Mexico
Oklahoma dropped its first match of the spring last week to a firing New Mexico, 5-2. OU gained its two points from the singles. Senior Anda Perianu (Braila, Romania) moved to 4-0 on the season with a straight-set win over UNM's Iva Gersic, 6-2, 6-0. Freshman Gabby Baker (Gold Coast, Australia) also had a convincing straight-set victory over UNM's Sandi Lukowski, 6-1, 6-0. In doubles, OU's team of Gabby Baker and Bethany Griffin (Amarillo, Texas) had a stong 8-4 win over UNM's Michelle Hiedbrink and Tiffany Robertson. Griffin and Baker remain undefeated at the No. 3 doubles spot at 3-0.
Perianu Continues to Defend No. 3 Ranking
Senior standout Anda Perianu (Braila, Romania) has been busy defending her No. 3 national ranking. Perianu is now 4-0 on the season in singles play including wins over three nationally ranked players. Most recently Perianu defeated 83rd-ranked Iva Gersic of New Mexico.
Mark Johnson In 16th Year At Oklahoma
In his 16th season as head coach at Oklahoma, Mark Johnson owns a career record of 240-119 (.668). He has also coached four teams, three singles competitors and four doubles pairs to the NCAA Championships. Johnson has won five coach of the year honors, including Big Eight Coach of the Year in 1991, 1994 and 1995, Big 12 Tri-Coach of the Year in 1999 and most recently the ITA Central Region Coach of the Year in 2003.
OU To Host Big 12 Championships
Oklahoma will host the 2004 Men's and Women's Big 12 Tennis Championships at the Headington Family Tennis Center in Norman. Tournament action begins Fri., April 30 and runs through Sun., May 2. Ticket prices are as follows; All session four day pass, $15, single session adult pass, $5, and single session youth/student pass, $2.
