Senior Caton Hill (Ada, Okla.) has been named to the 2004 Verizon Academic All-District VI Women's Basketball Team, chosen by the district's members of College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA). The 2004 Academic All-America team will be announced on Thursday, March 4.
Hill has guided OU to a current national ranking of No. 24 in the AP poll, an overall record of 17-6 and a 7-5 Big 12 mark heading into Saturday's game at Baylor.
“To be named to this team once is such an honor but to have it happen twice is something really special,” said senior forward Caton Hill. “We are extremely fortunate at OU to have a great Academic Center and support staff available to us. I'm proud to contribute to the academic success the women's basketball team and athletic department has had recently.”
Hill, who has a 3.63 grade-point average in zoology, has already interviewed at three University for medical school next fall: Oklahoma, Kansas and United States Uniform Services. The Oklahoman is the team leader and ranks among the league's best in rebounding with 6.0 boards per game. She also ranks among the Big 12 Conference's top 20 in five different categories including scoring and three-point field goal percentage.
This is Hill's second and Oklahoma's fifth Verizon Academic All-District VI honor. She also earned this honor during the 2001-02 season but did not qualify for nomination last season due to redshirting.
This marks the fourth-straight season head coach Sherri Coale has had a member of her team on the Academic All-America ballot. Stacey Dales earned Academic All-America first team honors in 2002 and second team honors in 2001. Hill appeared on the All-America ballot with Dales in 2002, while Theresa Schuknecht earned Academic All-America first team honors last season.
The three-time team captain is looking to become the only Sooner to surpassed the 1,500-point mark, grab 1,000-rebounds and pocket 200 steals in her career. She currently has 15,17 points, 986 rebounds and 197 steals. She holds the school record for most defensive rebounds with 696 and ranks seventh on the all-time scoring list (1,517 points).
Hill is one of three players from the Big 12 Conference named to the District VI First Team. Rounding out the five-member All-District First Team are: Texas Tech senior forward Jolee Ayers-Curry (sport management major); Texas junior guard Jamie Carey (sociology/social work major); Southern Mississippi senior guard Lana Lewis (biological sciences major); and Rice senior guard Lindsey Maynard (economics/managerial studies major).
Oklahoma returns to action on Saturday, Feb. 21 when it travels to Waco, Texas to face No. 19 Baylor (19-6, 7-5) at 7 p.m. That Big 12 contest also will air on KOMA Radio (1520 AM) and on the internet at www.SoonerSports.com.
