NORMAN, Okla. Sherri Coale is not only a well-known name within the University of Oklahoma but across the state as well. Coale was recently honored by the Christian Higher Education system for being an Outstanding Alumni.
Coale graduated summa cum laude from Oklahoma Christian in 1987 with a bachelor of science degree in physical education with a minor in English. She earned NAIA Scholar-Athlete honors her senior year as a member of the Lady Eagle basketball team.
Coale was also inducted into Oklahoma Christian Hall of Fame on Feb. 15, 2002.
“Oklahoma Christian was the perfect place for me,” said Coale. “I had the opportunity to compete athletically and I was challenged academically. Maybe most importantly, I was in an environment of excellence. At OC I was surrounded by people who modeled not just how to work or how to study or how to play, but how to be. Any success I may have achieved since my time there is a reflection of the mission of that institution.”
The Council for Christian Colleges and Universities selected Coale and 20 others from 105 CCCU member institutions for this award. They were chosen in five fields of expertise: government and law, arts and entertainment, community and society, science and technology, and business. Each alum attributes his or her success to the experiences at a CCCU higher education institution.
“My experience at OC was more than the pursuit of a formal education. Now that I'm in the business of impacting and educating young people, I realize what a pivotal point this is in the maturation process of all of us. We not only gain a degree but we figure out who we are, what we believe in and what we stand for, what we're going to be about,” Coale said.
