NORMAN, Okla. -- The University of Oklahoma women's basketball team opened the 2004 season with a 101-57 exhibition win against TTT Riga (Latvia) on Thursday at the Lloyd Noble Center. The Sooners were led by solid three-point shooting from sophomores Chelsi Welch and Erin Higgins who combined to shoot 7-14 from beyond the arc. OU concluded the game with six players scoring 10-or-more points.
Welch led OU in scoring with 16 points, 11 of which came in the first half on 6-11 shooting from the field. Higgins was right behind her with 14 points and led the Sooners' long-distance shooting attack with four treys on seven attempts.
Latvia's Ieva Tare led all scorers with a game-high 17 points.

The Sooners jumped out to an early first half lead and never looked back against a Latvia team that defeated Wichita State (72-60) earlier in the week. OU led 51-35 at the break and was shooting a sizzling 54 percent (17-31) from the field and 46 percent (7-15) from three-point land heading into intermission.
The second half featured more of the same from the Sooners as they hit five more 3s. Sophomore Krista Sanchez led OU in the second half with 10 points off the bench followed by nine from freshman Kelly Lam while another freshman, Stephanie McGhee, contributed eight points.
Sophomore Leah Rush posted a game-high eight caroms. Rush also chipped in eight points in the contest.
The Sooners finished game shooting 50 percent from the floor on 35-69 shooting, including 12-27 (44 percent) from beyond the arc. They also out rebounded TTT Riga, 39-28.
OU extends its exhibition winning streak to 11 games and will return to the floor on Thursday, Nov. 11 against Oklahoma Christian inside the Lloyd Noble Center at 7 p.m. The game will mark the final exhibition contest for OU before it opens the 2004 regular season at home against Southeast Missouri State on Friday, Nov. 19 at 7 p.m.
