NORMAN, Okla. -- The Oklahoma volleyball team fell in four games (30-28, 19-30, 20-30, 19-30) to TCU on Wednesday night at the Howard McCasland Field House. The Sooners were attempting to become the first team in program history to finish the non-conference season with a perfect record. The loss dropped OU to 10-12 on the season, while TCU improved to 18-8.
Three late blocks, all of which freshman Anna Stadel assisted on, sparked the Sooners to the come-from-behind 30-28 victory in the first game of the night. Apparently the momentum from the rally didn't carry over between games as the Sooners came out flat in the second game and quickly fell behind 10-2. OU would get no closer than eight points before losing 30-19.
Box Score
TCU carried momentum into the third game and jumped out to an early lead in the third game. The Horned Frogs hit .256 in the session, while the Sooners hit below .050 for the second consecutive game and lost 20-30.
The fourth and final game was more of the same for the Horned Frogs, who took an early five point lead and never allowed the Sooners back into the game.
TCU outhit OU on the night .287 to .078 and tallied 22 kills. The differential was a product of OU's passing, which was sporadic all evening.
Sophomore Joanna Schmitt collected her 11th double-double of the season with 17 kills and 12 digs. She was one of a few bright spots for OU.
Junior Gabriela Tonon put away 12 kills, which were offset by her .143 hitting percentage. No other Sooner contributed more than five kills.
Senior libero Stephanie Tengram anchored the back row defense with 12 digs, while sophomore Rachel Jackson helped with nine and freshman setter Julie Chester contributed eight. Tengram has tallied double-digit digs in 15 of the last 19 contests.
Chester also had a career-high four kills on nine attempts for a .444 hitting percentage.
The Sooners could not slow down TCU outside Dominika Szabo who had 22 kills while hitting .370. On the flip side, freshman libero Talaya Whitfield was able to slow down the Sooner offense with an OU-opponent-season-high 27 digs.
The Sooners (2-11 Big 12) return to Big 12 play this Saturday when they travel to Lawrence to face the Kansas Jayhawks. KU entered the evening 4-8 in conference and 13-8 overall.
