Oklahoma Wrestlers Win At All-Star Classic

NORMAN, Okla. Oklahoma wrestlers won two matches at the 39th annual Marines/NWCA All-Star Classic at the campus of Southern Illinois-Edwardsville on Monday.

First ranked Sam Hazewinkel scored first with an early takedown against third ranked Nick Simmons of Michigan State. Hazewinkel, a sophomore, came into the match with a career record of 43-5 and a season record of 8-0 to defeat Simmons by a 2-0 decision.

Third ranked Teyon Ware was the second Sooner to take the mat, facing fourth ranked Cory Cooperman of Lehigh at 141 pounds. The match was a tight, low-scoring event with zero takedowns. Ware came into the exhibition with a career record of 61-9 and a season record of 8-0. Ware got an escape in the second period and gave up an escape in the third to tie up the match. The match went into double overtime and with 14 second left Ware was able to escape to claim the title with a 2-1 victory.

The Sooners will host its first scheduled dual against University of Central Oklahoma in Norman High School on Thursday, Dec. 9, at 7 p.m. The Sooners will continue its competition week with a home dual on Sunday, Dec. 12, against No. 1 Oklahoma State in the Lloyd Noble Center at 2 p.m.
