Taj Gray Named Big 12 Rookie of the Week

NORMAN, Okla. Taj Gray earned the season's first Big 12 men's basketball Rookie of the Week award on Monday for his effort against Cal State Northridge in Oklahoma's season-opening 82-72 victory on Saturday. 

Playing in his first NCAA Division I game, Gray scored 29 points and pulled down 14 rebounds to go along with four assists, four blocked shots and a steal.  The 6-9 junior from Wichita, Kan., was 9-for-17 from the field and 11-for-13 from the free throw line.  Twenty-three of his points came after halftime. 

Kansas' Wayne Simien was named Big 12 Player of the Week after producing 25 points, 14 rebounds, one assist and one blocked shot in a narrow win over Vermont.

Gray, who attended Redlands Community College in El Reno the last two years, will lead Oklahoma against High Point Thursday night in the Great Alaska Shootout in Anchorage.  The game will begin at 11 p.m. CST.  The Sooners will play Utah or Washington on Friday and Alabama, Alaska Anchorage, Furman or Minnesota on Saturday.
