Journal Entry No. 1 - Nov. 2, 2004

Another season begins! We just wrapped up preseason. Which for those of you who don't know, preseason is the devil. It is really exciting to start basketball practice, but it's almost just as exciting to end preseason.

Preseason is the time that we condition and lift weights, ah-hmm... at 5:30 a.m. As our endurance and strength increases, we get increasingly intolerant of our poor strength coach. I guess he's kind of like a lawyer, you understand the necessity and you're glad he's there, but really, you hate him. He's actually a great guy who takes good care of us. He handles our antics well considering how frequently he hears the words: I, hate, you, and, Tim. These words are usually gasped on laps 7, 8, 9, and 10, respectively.

Now that we have started practice, we feel a little more like a basketball team and less like we are participating in track. We looked really good for the first two weeks. We looked, what Coach Coale calls, “scary good.” for a couple of days.

It is always exciting to see short little peeks of great basketball, especially this early. But, when a team goes a long time without any games, they start to get tired of playing one another, “Oh big shocker, I'm guarding Casey today, similar to yesterday and the day before...”. This is the point were practice starts to look not as good. It makes me a little nervous that we weren't quite as sharp the past couple of days, but I think it mostly just means that it's just about time for the games to begin.

I'm pretty excited for the team that we have this year. Naturally, we have all the returnees, including Chelsi the new addition to our ridiculously large sophomore class (recruiting is going to be fun after they graduate!). We also have two new freshmen, Kelly Lam and Stephanie McGee. By the way, Steph, won't admit it, but she really likes to be called McGoo. Everyone is doing well and moving along nicely especially our freshmen. They have to keep up with an incredible pace of learning and they are adjusting very well.

I guess that's all for the update! Everything is going pretty well, a little bumpy right now, but I'm sure it will be worked out before Thursday. Until, then...

Until next week, Boomer Sooner!
