Volleyball Cant Complete Season Sweep Of Colorado

November 13, 2004 | Volleyball

NORMAN, Okla. -- The Oklahoma volleyball team failed in its bid to sweep the season series from Colorado on Saturday night at the Coors Event Center in Boulder, Colo.  The Buffaloes swept the Sooners by scores of 24-30, 14-30, 24-30 and thus succeeded in avenging a previous five game loss to OU.

OU fell to 11-14 overall and 3-13 in Big 12 play, while Colorado improved to 12-12 and 7-10 in conference.

The Sooners came out strong, blocking eight balls in the first game. Unfortunately, they were unable to overcome a back row defense that tallied just nine digs in the opening 24-30 loss. The Sooners failed to hit above .150 and  mustered only 19 digs in the final two games which sealed their fate on this evening.

Box Score

OU's work at the net fell of dramatically after a first game that was one of the best this season.  The Sooners finished the match with nine total blocks, which just one coming after the first session.  OU was coming off a five game win against Texas Tech in which they tallied 24.5 roofs.

As usual sophomore Joanna Schmitt paced the offense with 13 kills while hitting .152.  Her hitting percentage was par for the team, which had one only player - freshman setter Julie Chester - hit above .167.  Chester hit .667 with two put-aways on three swings.  As a team OU hit .117.

Chester's stats were solid with 31 assists and a team-high seven digs.  Sophomore defensive specialist Rachel Jackson equaled Chester with seven digs, while sophomore Anna Monsen had six scoops in her second career start at libero.

Trailing Schmitt in kills were junior Gabriela Tonon and freshman Anna Stadel with eight and seven, respectively.

Colorado was surprisingly led by the Amber Nu'u who had 17 kills.  Nu'u did not play in the first meeting with OU.  Her sister, Ashley, was again a thorn in OU's side with nine kills on 12 attempts from the setting position.

OU continues Big 12 play with a daunting trip to No. 20 Kansas State.  The Sooners and Wildcats will meet at the Ahearn Field House, which is know as one of toughest visiting venues in collegiate volleyball, on Wednesday at 7 p.m.
