Runners Ready for Red River Relay

NORMAN, Okla The Oklahoma Sooners men's and women's cross country teams travel to Dallas, Texas, Friday for the first ever Red River Relay.

The event, which may become an annual tradition for the night before the OU-Texas football game, will be quite different from the usual cross country meets that the Sooners run.

“We're adding a different element to this meet to shake up the routine,” OU head coach Rodney Rothoff said, “and sharpen our skills before the next race weekend.”

Instead of running in a field of ten or more teams, the race will be run as a relay. The women will compete against No. 13 Southern Methodist and the men will race against Paul Quinn College. The relay will consist of three 2,000-meter runs.

“SMU will have a good team and give our women an opportunity to compete against quality athletes,” Rothoff said.

“SMU coach, John Rembao, and I are very excited about making this into a tradition,” Rothoff said.

The Red River Relay, hosted by Southern Methodist, will be held at Norbuck Park in Dallas, with the women's race beginning at 5 p.m. and the men following at 6 p.m.
