Volleyball Falls In Four To No. 15 Texas A&M

October 30, 2004 | Volleyball

NORMAN, Okla.   The Oklahoma volleyball team jumped out to an early one game lead on No. 15 Texas A&M but couldn't sustain momentum and ended up falling in four games (30-27, 18-30, 30-25, 17-30) to the Aggies on Saturday night at the Howard McCasland Field House.  It marks the second consecutive year that OU has taken a game from A&M, who leads the all-time series 30-1.

Texas A&M held onto its third place Big 12 standing by improving to 14-5 overall and 10-3 in conference, while OU remains in 10th place with a 10-11 overall mark and 2-11 mark in league play.

The Sooners and Aggies split the first two games.   OU jumped out in the first game thanks to a consistent offense that hit nearly 200 points higher than A&M (.270 to .089).  A&M controlled the second game despite a Sooner offense that scored 15 of its 18 points on kills.  Freshman Anna Stadel led the Sooner offense with six kills and no errors through two.  Senior Keri Coats wasn't far off with eight kills and one error.

Box Score

OU carried a three point lead until the midway point of the third frame.  Then A&M reeled off a nine-point rally that sealed the session.   The Sooners picked up their defense with 19 third game digs but it was to no avail as they fell into a 2-1 hole.

A&M jumped out to a 6-0 lead in the fourth game and cruised home with a 30-17 game win and 3-1 match win.

Stadel, a freshman starting for just the third time, had a breakout match for OU.  She tallied career highs in kills (12), attempts (23), hitting percentage (.478), solo blocks (2) and block assists (5).

Fellow freshman Julie Chester had a career high 49 assists and continues to progress as the Sooner rookie signal caller.  She also contributed one kill, seven digs and two block assists.

Sophomore Joanna Schmitt put away 16 kills and dug seven balls.  Senior Keri Coats hit .267 while pounding 13 kills.

The defensive back row was stabilized by senior Stephanie Tengram and sophomore Rachel Jackson who had 15 and 11 digs, respectively.

As usual the highly ranked Aggies were led by the dynamic duo of Laura Jones and Melissa Munsch.  Jones had a match high 24 kills, while Munsch ranked second with 18 kills.
