Vickers Cup Ends in 6-6 Draw

NORMAN, Okla. The 2004 Vickers Cup, a match play event contested by University of Oklahoma men's golf alumni and the current team, ended in a 6-6 draw today at the Jimmie Austin Golf Course.

“I think the event was a success,” Former OU All-American and event organizer Rick Bell said. “I'd love to continue to grow this and bring back 50 guys next year. I think this time of year works out with a lot of guys on the Tour. We appreciate everyone who came.”

Headlining the event was the matchup of 2004 British Open Champion Todd Hamilton and three-time All-American Doug Martin versus 2003 NCAA Phil Mickelson Freshman of the Year Anthony Kim and All-American Carlos Del Moral.

The team of Hamilton and Martin won two up on Kim and Del Moral.

“It's a great event and it's only getting better and better,” OU head coach Jim Ragan said. “It means a lot to the program to have those guys come back and participate. Take Phillip Bryan for example. Last year he was in high school playing against guys who shot 80s. Today he was out there with a four-time Tour winner.”

It was the third consecutive tie between the current and former Sooners. The 2003 Vickers Cup ended 5-5 and the 2002 edition ended 13-13. The alumni team has never won.

Aside from Hamiton and Martin, former alumns three-time All-American and PGA Tour veteran Andrew Magee, Marty Askins, Mark Austin, Tripp Davis, Derek Freeman and John McClure.
