Gabby Baker Moves On In ITA Regional

Norman, Okla. - Three Oklahoma women's tennis players competed in second-round singles action at the Michael D. Case Tennis Center in Tulsa, Okla., Friday at the Wilson/ITA Central Region Championships. Ninth-seeded sophomore Gabby Baker was the lone Sooner to move on to the round of 16.

In the round of 32, Baker defeated New Mexico's Lucy Scott after winning the first set tie-breaker, 7-5, and finishing off the second set, 6-3, to move on to the round of 16. In other singles action, senior Jessica Braver was defeated by No. 3 seed Gitte Osterman of Nebraska, 6-0, 6-0. Senior Heather Saluri put up a tough battle against No. 2 Maja Kovacek of New Mexico. Saluri dropped the first set, 6-3, but bounced back to win, 7-5, and forced a third set, but lost, 6-4, to lose the match.

In consolation play, senior Bethany Griffin handily defeated ISU's Jill Palen, 6-3, 6-2, in straight sets.

The rest of scheduled play was postponed due to rain forcing the round of 32 doubles action to be played Saturday. The team of Grrifin and Baxley will compete against OSU's Sandra Blajer and Jana Kubickiova while OU's seventh-seeded Lykina and Saluri will take on Tara Grant and Ana Renda of Saint Louis. Also competing for the Sooners in doubles action will be Baker and Braver who will play aginast Nebraska's PAmela Castellejos and Katie Garcia.

In addition, Baker will play No. 5 Lynee Kever of Colorado in the round of 16 singles play Saturday while Griffin will compete against Boise State's Alissa Ayling in consolation play.
