Women's Tennis Advances Three At ITA Regional

Norman, Okla. - The Oklahoma women's tennis team advanced three singles women in the first round of main draw competition at the Wilson/ITA Central Regional Championships at the Michael D. Case Tennis Center in Tulsa, Okla. All three OU doubles teams received a bye and will play in second round competition Friday.
In singles action, No. 9 seeded sophomore Gabby Baker got the Sooners rolling after defeating Boise State's Alissa Ayling, 6-3, 6-2. Senior Heather Saluri held on in a tough match to beat Maja Stanojevic of SMS, 7-6, 7-5. Also advancing to second round action was senior Jessica Braver who handily beat New Mexico State's Nicole Fintell, 6-3, 6-1.
In other singles action, senior Bethany Griffin was defeated by Oklahoma State's Irina Tkachenko, 6-4, 6-1. In another tough battle, eighth-seeded sophomore Irina Lykina dropped the first-round match to Jenny Trettin of Denver, 7-6, 6-2. The Sooners had three of five singles competitors advance to second round action.
The first round of main draw doubles action also began Thursday. All three Oklahoma pairs drew a bye and will automatically advance to second-round play. The team of freshman Christi Baxley and Griffin along with seventh-seeded Lykina and Saluri and Baker and Braver will take the court on Friday.
The Wilson/ITA Central Region Championships will continue 8 a.m. Friday, Oct. 22, with round of 32 play in singles, doubles and consolations.
