Ortiz, Redman and Frazier To Headline Diamond Dinner

January 07, 2004 | Baseball

Former Oklahoma baseball greats and current Major League Baseball stars Russ Ortiz and Mark Redman will return to campus to help the Sooners kick off the new season at the Diamond Dinner on Friday, Jan. 23. George Frazier, a letterman at OU in the mid-1970s and current voice of the Colorado Rockies, will join the major leaguers as one of the dinner's key note speakers. Current Oklahoma players and coaches will also be in attendance.

The annual benefit dinner, which is open to the public, will be held this year in the Oklahoma Memorial Union Ballroom and is set to begin at 7 p.m. The cost to attend is $20 per person. Parking is available in the Union Parking Garage. Reservations may be made by contacting the Oklahoma baseball office at (405) 325-8354.

Sponsors for the event include Banc First, The Daily Oklahoman, Lee Allan Smith, Dorchester Capital, Jackie Cooper Ford and Jackie Cooper BMW.

A Sooner letterman from 1993-95, Ortiz capped off a career season in 2003 with the Atlanta Braves by finishing fourth in the Cy Young Award voting after topping all National League pitchers with 21 wins. He helped lead the Braves to their 12th-straight division title this past year. Ortiz, who spent his first five major league seasons with the San Francisco Giants, has won at least 14 games and totaled a minimum of 195 innings in each of his first six years at the big-league level.

A fellow teammate of Ortiz's on the Sooners' College World Series teams of 1994 and 1995, Redman experienced his own major league success this past year as a member of the World Champion Florida Marlins. He went 14-9 with a 3.59 ERA as one of the Marlins' top starters in his only season with the club. Prior to the 2003 season, Redman spent time with Minnesota and Detroit and was recently acquired by the Oakland Athletics.

The University of Oklahoma Home Run Club is once again the official presenter of the event. Those interested in joining the Oklahoma baseball team's official support group can do so at the banquet, or by contacting the Oklahoma baseball office, with a donation of $50.

OU opens its season on the road at the Surprise Coca-Cola Classic in Surprise, Ariz., against Gonzaga on February 12.
