Caton Hill's Diary Entry No. 4

January 06, 2004 | Women's Basketball

A lot of people ask if I have any pre-game rituals or superstitions. I don't have to wear the same dirty socks or listen to the same song before every game. I don't have a lot of things that I have to do but I have a lot that I can't or won't do.

I won't wear anything distracting like a wrist band or head band. I find that I am so aware of these things that I become distracted. I won't even wear fingernail polish for that reason. I can't wear my hair in any style other than the attractive rat-bun I wear because otherwise it bothers me.

I can't wear a bunch of make-up because it gets in my eyes. Although I have settled on a little blush because I feel I look like death if I don't. I don't listen to head phones because I feel out of touch with my teammates plus I never have a good game when I do.

Other than those things, I just take what comes. I've learned that just because you duplicate what you did the previous game doesn't mean you will get the same results. You have to be able to change and adapt in order to be successful. If you have to rely on a pattern or procedure you will get left behind.

You control the things you can control like your attitude and effort. Sometimes players (myself included) get caught up in the little things that they can't control and then loose focus on their attitude and effort. That's when bad games happen and that's definitely what I want to avoid.
